How Deepak Chopra’s Teachings On Mindfulness Can Make You A More Successful Entrepreneur

Getting a business off the ground and keeping it there is stressful no doubt.  Besides creating, establishing and marketing your product or service, you also have to set goals, meet tight deadlines, secure finances and manage a team.  The path to success can be shadowed by setbacks and disappointments—it’s never easy to climb to the top.

Mindfulness meditation can help you stay on track, take frustrations in stride and work at your maxim potential as you grow and sustain your business.  As a busy entrepreneur it can seem wasteful to take time out once or twice a day to do what might seem as essentially nothing.  However, there is a wealth of information that supports mindfulness as a key tool to success and happiness—not just in business, but in life as well.

Doctor and ex-Harvard professor, Deepak Chopra has become one of the most famous figures in the holistic health movement. He has risen to fame over the past twenty years by writing 21 New York Times bestsellers—his most famous being The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. He’s also a prominent lecturer and has made numerous TV appearances, notably on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Although some of Chopra’s ideas have become controversial, his views on mindfulness are spot on and supported by numerous studies.  The fact is this: mindfulness makes favorable changes in the brain.  Mindfulness helps you be a top performer.

Although Chopra claims to meditate for two and a half hours daily, he explains that all you need to do is to set 15-20 minutes aside for meditation each day.

Here are 5 teachings of Deepak Chopra on how mindfulness can improve your business and overall life quality:

Mindfulness Increases Your Performance

“The highest levels of performance come to people who are centered, intuitive, creative, and reflective - people who know to see a problem as an opportunity.”

When you’re relaxed and rooted in the present moment, you’re going to be more focused and get more work done.  You’re more likely to see opportunities and not feel the anxiety and fear about potential or real obstacles.  You give room for your imagination and originality to flow and minimize the chances that you’ll feel frustrated or up against a wall.

Chopra explains how “Multitasking is the one skill that gets worse with practice”.  He discusses how we must compartmentalize our day.  For example, when you’re at work, your entire focus is there.  When you’re at home—you’re fully in that moment.  He talks about the importance of putting away your cell phone and allocating specific times to dedicate wholeheartedly to different parts of your life.

Mindfulness Extends Time

“Life gives you plenty of time to do whatever you want to do if you stay in the present moment.”

Do you ever have the feeling that time is slipping away from you?  That days have gone by and you’re not quite sure where all those moments went?  It’s because of the rush, the distractions and all the things in life that vie for our attention.  By being focused on the present moment, time feels like it goes by more slowly and you’ll feel like you have more simply because you’re less distracted.

This closely connects with Chopra’s comments improving performance.  By improving focus and eliminating distractions you, in effect, extend time and work at a higher mental level.

Mindfulness Helps You Let Go Of Losses

“We all feel the urge to condemn ourselves out of guilt, to blame others for our misfortunes and to fantasize about total disaster.”

No matter how strong we feel, rejections, setbacks and failures hurt.  Additionally, we can create tremendous anxiety by imaging future failures and misfortunes.   It’s easy to turn that pain and unease inward—causing emotional distress.  Mindfulness and focusing on the present moment helps us to distance ourselves from the past and remember that we can’t predict the future.  What happened before doesn’t determine what will happen today.

Chopra explains that letting go of loss and baggage isn't an easy process. But that by letting yourself experience your negative emotions and by sharing your fears with confidants, you open yourself to put the past behind you.

Mindfulness Helps Give You Faith In Yourself

“Always go with your passions. Never ask yourself if it's realistic or not.”

Self-doubt happens to everyone.  And even when they mean well, getting caught up in the opinions of colleagues and loved ones can sometimes take pull you from your true path.  Taking time to be alone and be mindful gives you the chance to hear your inner voice and separate it from the outside ideas and information that come to us each day.  Mindfulness helps us realize and follow our dreams.

Chopra explains that it’s important to consistently remind yourself of thee things:

1)   That you’re independent of good and bad opinions of others.

2)   That you’re beneath no one and that no one is beneath you.  And

3)   That you’re fearless in the face of all challenges.

Mindfulness Helps You Manage Your Team

“If you want to do really important things in life and big things in life, you can't do anything by yourself.”

Nobody gets to the top alone.  Anyone who’s operating on a world-class level has mentors, guides and a team of support.  Being mindful helps you to interact more gracefully and empathetically with others.  By being in the moment with your team, you’re more likely to promote combined efforts and minimize disputes and careless mistakes.

Chopra explains that a great leader can never be distracted.  You won’t see them checking their iPhone or multitasking while they talk to you. They understand fully that the most important people in their lives are the ones in front of them right now.

The Bottom Line

It may seem counterintuitive, but taking for meditation helps you to be mindful throughout the day.  Deepak Chopra and thousands of others have spoken to the benefits of this practice.  If you want to be a top performer, who gets more work done, takes loss in stride, has real self-confidence and is a good leader—mindfulness is the key.
